Shark!

Anchors Away

Eagle

In 2005 I had a free weekend and decided to go to Dauphin Island, Al. to do some fishing and diving.  My cousin Michael, & his wife Ann, my friend Paul, Frank; my identical twin brother and I left the week before snapper season was to end. The trip was going good and we had caught several large snappers, amberjacks and some large groupers.

"Who wants to dive the first?" I asked as I was suiting up.  Paul said he would dive with me.  The Liberty Ship Anderson was the dive.  This is a large wreck 90 feet underwater that has plenty of fish and life. We speared a few snappers headed back to the boat.

Shortly after we were back on the  boat, Michael, Ann and Frank were in the water.  Frank had just bought a new spear gun and was ready to use it. While they were diving,  Paul and I decided to fish from the boat.

Thirty minutes later - "Sharks they're molesting us!" Ann yelled.  She was in the water fifty yards away.  "What should we do? Should we pick them up?" Paul asked.  "We can't, Frank is down there somewhere.  If we move the boat, Frank will not be able to come up the anchor rope." I said. So, we waited.

Michael and Ann were looking down into the water, watching the sharks as they circled underneath.  It was like Indians circling the wagon. They finally made it back to the boat.  "Sharks, they were all around us!" Ann exclaimed.  "Michael had shot an Amberjack, and refused to give it to the shark."  Ann was upset with Mikes decision about that! LOL

Personally, I probably would have kept the fish also.  My reasoning, not wanting to start shark frenzy.  Who knows what the right thing to do would have been, at least they made it back to the boat; that's enough for me.  Frank, my twin?  He was still down there in the water.  Did a shark eat him......?

Soon, Frank is up the anchor line, his eyes are large! He has a fish on his side, spear shaft in one hand and no spear gun.  He choose to keep the fish as Mike did.  "Frank what happened?" I asked.   "Sharks, three of them! I had just shot an Amberjack and had put it on my stringer,  I was checking my dive computer when I saw a shark tale go by.  I almost hyperventilated.  That is when I lost my spear gun.  I had my back against the wreck, so I could see what was coming.  A shark came close, I poked him!"  I asked; "How close did the shark get?"  "I poked him Marc, THAT CLOSE!"

After all the fish stories were over, I told everyone I had a confession to make.  I always go down on the first dive and never the second dive because you might see sharks.  The reason for this is because if a shark is around you will see it on the second dive.  Now no one will do a second dive if spear fishing is involved.  I don't think Ann will get back into the water with spear gunners. LOL
